Tinubu’s Education Promises and the Politics of Deception: When Presidential Stories Collide With Public Reality

From the celebrated Chicago taxi-driver story to billions of naira in education announcements, Nigerians deserve more than inspiring speeches. They deserve verifiable facts, measurable results and a president who can be held accountable for his words. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's latest message on education is carefully constructed around a compelling personal story. He tells Nigerians that when he first arrived in the United States as a young man, he drove a taxi to finance his education. He says he postponed starting school for several months to save money, worked different jobs in Chicago and struggled to pay his tuition and accommodation. The story is designed to establish a connection between the President's personal experiences and the economic struggles of Nigerian students. It presents him as someone who understands the sacrifices required to obtain an education because he supposedly experienced those sacrifices himself. But there is a fundamental probl...

MNR Mobilises Nigerians for National Renewal Ahead of 2027 Elections, Declares Support for Peter Obi

The Movement for National Renewal (MNR), a Pan-Nigerian citizens’ movement, has announced its commitment to mobilising Nigerians across ethnic, religious and social divides to demand accountable leadership and promote democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The movement, operating under the motto “Towards a Renewed Nigeria,” said it was established in response to concerns about leadership and governance, with a mission to promote national unity, civic education, transparency and people-centred development.

In its statement of purpose, MNR described itself as a non-religious and non-tribal movement, emphasising that its primary commitment is to Nigeria and the welfare of its citizens.

“We are not a party. We are the people,” the movement declared, outlining its ambition to mobilise ordinary Nigerians to take an active role in shaping the country’s political future.

MNR said it seeks to build a prosperous, just and united Nigeria where merit takes precedence over mediocrity, public institutions operate transparently, and government remains accountable to the people.

The movement also identified Peter Obi as its preferred leader for the 2027 general elections, citing his record in public service and his emphasis on prudence, integrity and performance.

According to MNR, its support for Obi reflects its commitment to leadership guided by transparency, accountability, competence, character and commitment.

The group said it intends to mobilise Nigerians, including market women, students, farmers, workers, youths and older citizens, to participate actively in the democratic process and support leadership that prioritises public welfare.

MNR outlined three major areas of engagement: civic enlightenment and electoral literacy, institutional integrity and governance oversight, and policy reform advocacy.

Under civic enlightenment and electoral literacy, the movement said it would focus on educating citizens about their democratic rights and responsibilities to encourage informed electoral choices.

On institutional integrity and governance oversight, MNR said it would advocate transparency in public administration and demand accountability from public officials.

The movement also pledged to promote policy reforms aimed at sustainable development and improved living conditions for Nigerians.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, MNR is calling on Nigerians who share its vision to join its mobilisation efforts and contribute to what it describes as a national renewal project.

The movement maintained that achieving meaningful change would require active citizen participation, credible leadership and sustained demands for accountability.

It urged Nigerians to look beyond ethnic, religious and other divisions and unite around the common goal of building a country that works for all its citizens.

MNR reiterated its commitment to its guiding message: “Towards a Renewed Nigeria!”
