Tinubu’s Education Promises and the Politics of Deception: When Presidential Stories Collide With Public Reality

Image
From the celebrated Chicago taxi-driver story to billions of naira in education announcements, Nigerians deserve more than inspiring speeches. They deserve verifiable facts, measurable results and a president who can be held accountable for his words. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's latest message on education is carefully constructed around a compelling personal story. He tells Nigerians that when he first arrived in the United States as a young man, he drove a taxi to finance his education. He says he postponed starting school for several months to save money, worked different jobs in Chicago and struggled to pay his tuition and accommodation. The story is designed to establish a connection between the President's personal experiences and the economic struggles of Nigerian students. It presents him as someone who understands the sacrifices required to obtain an education because he supposedly experienced those sacrifices himself. But there is a fundamental probl...

Jack Dorsey's $32M Sea Cliff Compound Has Been Under Construction for 14 Years, and the Neighbors Are Fed Up

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has spent nearly 14 years turning his $32 million San Francisco estate into a luxury retreat, and his ultra-wealthy neighbors are tired of it. The renovation has become the best-known example of a building boom reshaping one of America's most exclusive enclaves.

What is Jack Dorsey building in Sea Cliff?

The project covers two adjoining properties along El Camino del Mar. They overlook the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge and total 1.21 acres. Dorsey bought the second property in 2018 for $21.9 million.

The amenities are what make the compound stand out. The primary bedroom opens onto a private hot tub above the Pacific. The estate also has a steam room, a plunge pool, and a large sauna complex with its own vestibule and dedicated passageway. It also has rooftop gardens.

Why has the renovation taken 14 years?

Much of the delay comes from the city's permit process. A major redevelopment application filed in December 2013 proposed $3.7 million in improvements, including seismic upgrades, more living space, roof decks and a planted roof. That permit alone took three and a half years to secure. A second redesign filed in 2020 changed the windows, courtyard and exterior finishes, and was approved in July 2022.

The fire protection requirements show the scale of the work: plans for 122 sprinklers and a dedicated 145-foot water line.

Dorsey's own career changed a lot in the meantime. He returned to Twitter as CEO and left again, and Elon Musk bought the company and renamed it X. Dorsey now runs Block.

What are the neighbors saying?

The New York Post's reporting rests on one anonymous resident, who complained of "24-7 construction noise in the distance for years now." That is a single voice, and the headline's "billionaire neighbors" framing is the Post's characterization. Still, the complaint is easy to believe given how much building is going on nearby.

Is Dorsey the only one building?

No. At least 24 homes along El Camino del Mar have filed building permits since 2025. One recent visitor described the area as a building site with a view, with diesel fumes and heavy machinery drowning out the sea breeze. Dorsey's project is the longest-running of them.

What can residents actually do about construction noise?

San Francisco residents can report suspected violations to the city's Department of Building Inspection and check whether a project's permits cover the work being done. Permitted work still has to follow the city's noise rules and allowed construction hours. Neighbors can look up any project's permit history in the public records, which is how the Dorsey timeline above was pieced together.

The bottom line

Fourteen years of permits, redesigns and construction on one compound shows how much money, and how slow the approval process, can shape a neighborhood. For now, Sea Cliff is still a work site, and the quiet its owners paid for remains out of reach.
